Practical travel guide
Thailand SIM cards & eSIMs
Get connected for maps, messages and travel bookings. Compare a local tourist SIM with a travel eSIM, then choose a package that fits your phone, trip length and data needs.
Start with your phone
Check that your phone is unlocked. For an eSIM, confirm that your exact model and regional version support eSIM and the provider’s plan. A physical SIM is an option if your phone does not support eSIM.
Which option suits your trip?

dtac / True tourist SIM
Compare physical SIM and eSIM options for Thailand. Check whether your selected package includes a Thai number, calls and SMS, as well as data.
Have your passport ready for registration and check the package’s expiry and re-identification rules.

Travel eSIM
A travel eSIM can be convenient if you want to arrange mobile data before departure. Airalo and SimOptions are options to compare with local operators.
Check the underlying network, activation rules and whether the plan is data-only. A travel eSIM does not always provide a local number.

Compare the details that matter
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Data and speed | Data allowance, any daily cap and speed limits or fair-use rules behind an “unlimited” offer. |
| Validity | Enough days for your full stay, and whether the clock starts at purchase, installation or first network connection. |
| Calls and SMS | A local number if you need ordinary Thai calls. Messaging apps work over data, but standard calls and SMS may require a different plan. |
| Hotspot | Whether tethering is permitted if you will connect a laptop or another phone. |
| Coverage | The network serving the plan and coverage at your hotel, islands and rural destinations. |
| Top-ups | How extra data works, whether the plan can be renewed, and what happens after expiry. |
Buying on arrival or before departure
Buying at an official operator counter can be useful if you want help with registration and setup. True and dtac list shops and airport locations on their tourist SIM page. Compare the full package cost with online options rather than assuming one channel is always cheaper.
If buying an eSIM before flying, save the installation instructions and make sure you have an internet connection for setup. Follow the seller’s activation instructions so you do not start the validity period too early.
A simple arrival checklist
- Save your hotel address and arrival transport details offline.
- Complete any required identity verification through the provider’s official process.
- Select your Thailand SIM or eSIM as the mobile-data line.
- Check roaming settings separately for each line. Some travel eSIMs require data roaming enabled on that eSIM; keep roaming on your UK line off unless you intend to use it and understand the charges.
- Test maps and messaging before leaving the counter or your Wi-Fi connection.
Keeping your usual number
With a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to keep your home line alongside your Thailand data line. Check your home provider’s overseas charges for calls, texts and voicemail, and turn off automatic mobile-data switching if it could use your home line abroad.
Staying longer or visiting another country?
Check renewal and identity-verification requirements before the plan expires. Do not assume a top-up extends a tourist SIM’s validity. If you are adding another country, confirm that it is included in your plan or arrange separate cover for mobile data.
